Making Space for the New You
3 February 2025

If you’re working on breaking free from diet culture and building a new way of living your environment can play a huge role in supporting your journey. Changing your approach to food and body image is not just about mindset shifts, it’s also about making physical and emotional space for the even more fabulous person you’re becoming.
It’s time to let go of the things in your home (and in your head) that no longer serve you. Creating a space that uplifts and supports you can make a massive difference in how you feel every day. And I promise, you don’t need to spend a fortune or take on an overwhelming project to do it.
Here’s how you can start making space for the new, body positive, intuitive eating you.
1. Declutter the kitchen: say goodbye to diet culture tools
Your kitchen should be a place of nourishment and joy, not a reminder of restrictive eating habits. Take a look around – do you still have old diet books, calorie-counting apps on your phone, or a cupboard full of “guilt-free” snacks? Let them go.
Swap out those scabby old meal prep containers that remind you of rigid eating plans for beautiful plates and bowls that make eating feel like a pleasure.
If you have kitchen gadgets that you only ever used for diet-related meals, consider whether they still have a place in your life. Your kitchen should feel like a space where you can cook, eat, and enjoy food without guilt.
2. Refresh your wardrobe: clothes that fit the new you
Opening your wardrobe should feel inspiring, not like a trip down memory lane of clothes that don’t fit. If you’ve got jeans you haven’t worn in years because you’re hoping to fit into them again, it’s time to find them a new home. Why not sell them on a site like Vinted and make yourself a little cash for your lovely new wardrobe pieces. Who knows what treasures you might find on there too!
Focus on filling your wardrobe with clothes that fit your body right now and make you feel amazing. You deserve to wake up and put on clothes that bring you confidence – not ones that make you feel like you need to change your body.
It doesn’t need to be expensive. You can start with a couple of key pieces like a pair of jeans and some mix and match tops, cardigans and/or jackets, and build on those. You can easily go from casual to dressy with the right jewellery, scarves, bags, shoes, hair and makeup, so play with them and see what looks you like.
3. Create a mealtime space that you love
Where and how you eat plays a big part in your relationship with food. If you’re eating off chipped plates with mismatched cutlery, consider upgrading to pieces that make you want to sit down and enjoy your meals.
You don’t have to buy a whole new set of tableware – start small. Maybe it’s a new favourite mug for your morning coffee or a plate that makes your meals look more inviting.
Simple changes like setting the table, using a cloth napkin, or eating with the “good” cutlery can make mealtimes feel more intentional and enjoyable.
Why not try some nice background music too?
Being organized isn’t about getting rid of everything you own or trying to become a different person. It’s about living the way you want to live, but better.

4. Brighten up your living space
Your surroundings can have a big impact on how you feel. If your space feels dull or cluttered you’re not going to feel great in yourself. Is it time for you to freshen things up?
You don’t need a full home makeover – small changes like adding soft lighting, tidying up, or rearranging furniture can help create an environment that reflects your new mindset.
Think about what makes you feel good. Maybe it’s adding a few houseplants, putting up some art that makes you smile, or simply clearing off a surface that’s been piling up with clutter.
Your home should feel like a sanctuary, not a space that drains you.
5. Make emotional space: clear out negative thoughts
It’s not just your physical space that needs a refresh – your emotional space does too. Letting go of old diet rules and negative self-talk is just as important as clearing out your kitchen or wardrobe.
One way to do this is by introducing small, positive rituals. A gratitude journal, a joy jar where you collect happy memories, or simply making time to reflect on what’s going well in your life can help shift your mindset.
The more you fill your emotional space with positivity, the less room there is for the old diet culture noise.
Final thoughts: it’s about making space for you
This isn’t about perfection or doing it all NOW – it’s about making small, intentional changes that help you feel more at home in your body and your life. The more you create an environment that supports your new intentional way of living, the easier it becomes to fully step into that version of yourself.
So, what’s one small change you can make today to start making space for the new you? Whether it’s clearing out a cupboard, donating old clothes, or setting up a cosy eating space, every little step adds up.
Maybe take a few minutes to wander around your home, and make a little checklist of the things you’d like to achieve in each room that would make you feel better? If your lists are long maybe give each one a rating. I’m thinking you could given them a time rating like “quick and easy” up to “time consuming”, or a money rating like “free” up to “need to save up”. Start with the easier ones or the ones you can do for free, and keep chipping away at them.
