The weird food preferences I can’t explain

12 May 2025

A block of cheese covered in rich chocolate sauce, representing quirky and weird food preferences that don’t quite make sense but still taste good.

What is it about weird food preferences that can be so specific, so irrational, and yet so fiercely defended?

I was going to write a blog post about it, but I was struggling to find the words to fully explain how wrong but yet so right some of my food choices are. The only option left was to create a podcast episode on it!

So, in this fun and light-hearted episode of the Intuitive Eating & Body Positivity Podcast, I’m sharing some of my own quirky food habits – the ones that make absolutely no sense but feel completely right to me.

Listen to this episode if….

🧀  You have strong feelings about grated vs sliced cheese – a classic unusual food preference.

🥛 You can’t drink water from a mug – it must be a glass. A totally valid quirky food habit.

🍝 You love pasta but draw the line at bow ties – some shapes just don’t hit the same.

🍴 You’re oddly particular about cutlery – the spoon/fork debate is real.

🥚 You think beans and runny egg yolk are fine separately, but together? Absolutely not.

🍕 You have any other food preferences that you think are a little on the bizarre side.

Why we have food quirks

Food isn’t just about hunger – it’s about texture, memory, comfort, and habit. Some food preferences just stick with us, even if they don’t make sense. And that’s okay.

In this episode, we’re leaning into the weirdness and celebrating the food quirks that make us who we are.

Our weird food preferences can come from childhood memories, food experiences, or even just sensory preferences.

Maybe you love crunchy crisps but can’t stand soft mashed potatoes. Or perhaps you’re a fan of ketchup but can’t bear tomato sauce. Whatever it is, it’s valid.

Share your odd food choices

Got a weird food preference of your own? I’d love to hear it! Share it with me and you might just hear it in a future episode.

From strange food pairings to completely illogical dislikes, I’m here for it.
